Angel's are watching over you {Castiel}

It was the morning after the fight Dean had started with Sam over his involvement with Ruby and Sam still hadn't returned. Dean had spent the rest of last night alone in their motel room, oblivious to the fact his brother was getting in some serious demon sexy time with Ruby because he'd pretty much passed out on the floor the second the door had closed behind him.

When he finally woke it was with a long and drawn out groan.

Ughh......I either got hit by a truck, or I tried to play smackdown with Bigfoot.....either way, I'm not really sure I wanna move right now....

This wasn't the first time he'd woken up on the floor somewhere without really knowing how he'd gotten there or where there actually was, so he ran through his typical mental checklist to make sure he was still in one piece first.

Okay, head still attached. Check. Pounding like someone's friggin' drilling inside it, but still attached. Leg's still there and moveable? Check. Arms? Check on one count....left one feels kinda numb? Oh. You've been sleeping on it. That would explain the numbness.

Rolling over onto his back unpinned the arm that had been squashed under his body all night and also served to intensify the throb deep in his skull, causing yet another groan accompanied by a rising sickly feeling in his stomach.

Ughh...how much did I drink last night?

Willing the nausea away as best he could, Dean shifted his attention to the where part of his situation, despite the fact he had yet to open his eyes.

Okay I'm lying on something soft. Well relatively soft. It's not the sidewalk, so that's something. Smells like carpet cleaner....

Tentatively he peaked open one eye to find he was staring up at the ugly ass light fixture that hung down in the centre of his motel room. Thankfully the room's curtains were still drawn which meant the light wasn't too bright for him. Never the less, he still squinted and frowned at having to open his eyes at all.

Huh. Guess I made it back in one piece after all. Go me. Might have been a better night's sleep if I'd made it to a bed though....

His next thought was to call out and see if Sam was there but figured that if he had been there, Dean probably wouldn't be in a heap on the floor right now unless Sam was still really pissed at him, in which case, he probably didn't want to talk right now anyway. Still, Dean reckoned that he should at least double check. Not that he was in any way putting off having to get up off the floor at all.

"Sam...?" He called out, voice thick and groggy from sleep and hangover. He noticed then too that his mouth tasted foul and that nearly sent him off on the nausea trip again.

Castiel sat on the cheap hotel bed looking down at Dean in a pile on the floor, and at that moment he was trying to work out exactly how it was that this was the man who was meant to save them all from hell on earth!

He believed that Dean had potential, it was however at this very moment some what hard to spot. What with him looking like he had only just managed to crawl out of what ever gutter he'd fallen in and collapse on the floor of the room, a few feet from the bed.

"Good morning Dean" Castiel said disapproval giving just a slight edge to his voice. "Sam is not here" he said in answer to the man calling out to his brother. "I am glad to see you have been working hard to stop Lucifer from rising" he told him sarcastically a steely look on his face.

They were loosing this war, he was not about to baby Dean through what ever personal issues he had going on. They did not matter right now, and Dean had to realise that. If they were going to win he needed to step up, and that time had come.

Sam didn't reply, which meant that Sam probably wasn't there, which in turn might have been a good thing. Dean didn't especially want his kid brother seeing him in such a state, particularly when it had been a little bit of his fault.

No, wasn't Sammy's fault. Was my fault....I was the one who got drunk and picked a fight.....

Dean did however get an answer from someone that made him flinch and jerk his head in the direction the voice had come from. Not a brilliant idea given the circumstances, but when Castiel insisted on just turning up unannounced, what could Dean do?

"Jesus!" Dean cursed, half at the shock of suddenly finding an angel staring down on him and half at the way the pain in his head notched up with the action. He quickly clapped one hand to his temple, pointlessly trying to stop his brains from pounding against his skull.

"I swear I'm putting a friggin bell on you one of these days...." He grumbled as he willed his headache away. Willpower just didn't seem to be working right now though, so he decided his next move should be to go get some painkillers.

Now if I can only get to my feet without puking or falling on my ass again, that'd be awesome....

Ignoring Castiel's sarcastic comment, Dean staggered up to wobbly legs and stood blinking sluggishly at the guy - angel - perched on the end of his bed. He might have glared at him, if only he could figure out which of the three that were staring back at him was the real Cas.

"This official business? Or d'you just stop by because you care?" Dean replied, his own sarcasm coming through in the second question.

"Either way, you gotta gimme a minute..." Otherwise I might just puke on your shoes.....

Dean wandered stiffly into the bathroom, all of five feet away, leaving the door open because he was pretty sure that if he bothered to close it, Castiel would only poof into there anyway and Dean didn't need any more sudden surprises right now. He took a moment to look at the mess that was staring back at him in the mirror, wondering how he'd turned into such a failure as a brother and how he'd managed to push Sam so far that he'd basically beaten Dean into oblivion.

His lips were both split, caked in blood where it had spilled out and dried during the night. His cheeks and temples were several different shades of blue and purple and there was dried blood under his nose and on his chin too. Not to mention the general dirty appearance from brawling on the ground last night.

Sighing, he looked away, bent a little to turn the taps on so he could splash some water on his face. He stopped however when he saw his raw bruised and swollen knuckles, They'd only gotten that way from hitting Sam. From hitting SAM.

So much for telling Dad you'd look after him Dean....

Castiel watched as Dean tried to clean himself up in the bathroom, wondering briefly why anyone would want to do that to themselves.

His eyes turn to look toward the window where the sun was trying to break through the drawn blinds. With a quick movement of his hand the blinds opened and the sun streamed into the room. Castiel loved the sun, in fact he loved anything his father had created.

He turned his head back to Dean who was still in the bathroom and saw him looking down at his hands that bore the unmistakable signs of his having used them to hit something very hard. Castiel studied the look that had come over Dean's face and thought he knew who was more than likely on the other end of his punches.

"Do you want to talk about it?" He asked Dean, he knew that Dean would more than likely not expect the angel to care or for that point even ask, but he was wrong, Castiel liked Dean and did care for him, as much as an angel was able to care for a human at any rate.

"Dean is Sam using his powers again?" he asked more serioulsy, it was the actual reason Castiel had come here this morning, he had to know and for Sam's sake at least, it was best if Castiel was the first to know and not Uriel who would not wait for orders, he would smite first ask questions later.

They had been keeping an eye on Sam, but they were also very busy trying to spot Lilith, and they were not all knowing. Even angels have their limits.

"Do you want to talk about it?"

Castiel's voice snapped Dean out of his trance and he glanced briefly over his shoulder as though he'd been caught in the act before putting up his internal walls of denial again.

"Talk about what? There's nothing to talk about. Just got in a fight, that's all. Had a few beers...." He said dismissively, washing off the dirt and blood from his hands and face, quickly and roughly.

Talk? What do you want me to say? I got hammered and pushed my own brother into a fight because I'm jealous of his relationship with a demon? Yeah I can really see you giving me advice on that one...

"Dean is Sam using his powers again?"

At that, Dean turned the taps off and spun back around to face Castiel with a look of mild shock.

"No." He said firmly, though he couldn't be certain. Sam spent more and more time away from him these days. Who knew what he got up to when he wasn't under Dean's watchful eyes.

"Is that what this is about? You're still worried about Sam?" He asked, stepping back into the room, dabbing gingerly at his sore face with the ratty motel towel to dry it. He felt more alert now but still rough as...well maybe not as rough as Hell, but close.

Castiel watched as Dean did what he had been expecting him to do and close off from the angel. It made Castiel wonder, if he would not trust an angel with his problems, who in the world did he actually trust to talk to. Moving on Castiel decided not to push it, what happened between Sam and Dean was not why he was here and so did not concern him.

"You should be worried about him too Dean" he spoke seriously as he stood up from the bed and moved to look out the window at the world passing by outside. "If he is and Uriel finds out first, not even I will be able to save Sam from what Uriel has been given permission to do to him."

He let these words sink in to Dean before slowly turning to him and continuing. "We know he has been spending more time with the demon, and Uriel, when he is not fighting in the lords name is watching Sam closely. I believe the only reason he has not caught him yet is because he does not have the time to follow him as much as he would like. But if Sam is using them Dean, you can trust me when I say that he will find out."

He paused, not sure if he should say what was on the tip of his tongue. He knew it would probably make Dean angry, but then it was the truth and Dean needed to hear it. "And Dean if Sam is using his powers, the ones given to him by a demon, then his punishment at the hands of us will be nothing short of fair and just. Evil must not be permitted to continue to reek its havoc on earth when it is in our power to stop it."

"Sam's not evil!" Dean said firmly, regretting the volume at which he'd spoken almost immediately when his headache intensified. His train of thought got momentarily derailed as a spike of pain ran straight through his brain and made him sway where he stood. He recovered quickly, holding onto the door frame of the bathroom as he pressed his thumb and forefinger to his temples with his other hand. If he didn't already have concussion, what Castiel had just told him about Uriel would have given him a headache anyway.

"Sam's not evil." He repeated once the pain had eased again, though this time he managed to say it without raising his voice to the angel.

"He was just trying to do something good with his powers, that's why he started using them, but he knows now that it was a mistake to go down that path, okay? There's no need to have Uriel checking up on him like some kind of creepy God-squad stalker."

Dean secretly feared that Uriel would take even the most tenuous link between Sam and his psychic abilities as an excuse to smite him somehow and if he did, then Dean wouldn't be able to do a damn thing to stop him. Now with the news that Uriel was on twenty-four hour Sam-watch, he was even more worried that his brother kept sneaking off on his own.

"It is not what Sam was or even what he is like now that concerns us Dean, it is what he may become that has us worried. Some, like Uriel feel the risk is to great to even allow him to the chance to do what is right." Castiel looked at Dean a sad and worried expression in his face.

"Sam is becoming more powerful Dean and we fear that if we allow it to continue, if he reaches the point of no return and becomes what Azazel had planned for him, that not even we will be able to stop him."

Castiel rose from the bed and moved closer to Dean looking him straight in the eyes, his head turned to one side as he looked up into Deans face. "Dean, Sam has already proven that not even Lilith can harm him as she can all others, does that not make you see what a danger he has the potential to become?"

He knew what he was asking Dean to accept was something the man would more than likely not be able to, but Castiel had to try. "And Dean... if Sam does turn evil, it will be because of what Azazel did to him, he will not be the Sam you know anymore. You know it's possible, deep down, you've seen a change in him haven't you" the angel pressed "the lying, the secrets, spending more and more time apart...."

Dean hated this, hated the fact that everything Castiel was saying he couldn't disagree with. Once over, he'd have laughed off the possibilty that Sam could be some kind of danger to anyone other than himself, but now....now he had changed. He was different in so many subtle ways that Dean didn't recognise him anymore.

When did I lose him?

With a weary sigh Dean glanced up and met Castiel's curious gaze. It was like looking at someone who could read your soul just by looking you in the eye and it always made Dean feel unsettled.

"I don't know what you're expecting me to do." He said, brow creased with worry for Sam. "He's m'brother. He always will be, no matter what he may or may not do in the future. I can't..."

I can't consider the fact you might ask me to kill him.

Stepping past Castiel, Dean slumped down onto the end of the bed where the angel had been sitting moments before, a tiny groan of discomfort slipping out as he did so. His body ached but more than that, he was tired of feeling like the weight of the world was on his shoulders.

"Can I ask you something?" He said, looking up at Castiel with uncertain eyes.

"Why me?" He let that hang for a moment.

"Out of all the souls in Hell, why'd you pull me out? Was it just so I could keep an eye on Sam? Or was it because I got too good at ripping the others apart, you were scared of what I would turn into?"
