She's got a biting sarcasm that peppers her everyday conversation, and can't stand being lumped in with all the other demons.
Although she can be cold and ruthless in some cases, there is also a softer side to Ruby that very few people get to see. She does have some lingering humanity, and that scares and confuses her, especially in regards to Sam Winchester. She always does what she has to in order to get the job done, whatever that job may be, but she does feel remorse and uncertainty.

History:
As a human, Ruby was born in the 1300's. She lived in a European village and had a bit of a dark personality. She was fascinated by magic and witchcraft. As a young woman, she began practicing and became a skilled witch. She soon became a part of a coven, who worshipped demons. Ruby was hesitant at first, but realized that the benefits outweighed the risks, at least in her opinion.
When the Black Plague became a pandemic, many people in her village died, including the bulk of her family. Ruby was devastated, having lost everyone who was dear to her to the Plague. She broke away from the coven, believing that she had brought this grief on herself by worshipping demons. She refused to practice and refused to serve the demon who had given her power.
Being deeply angered and offended by this, the demon demanded Ruby as a sacrifice from the other coven members. Since she had turned her back on them, her fellow witches killed her in a ritualistic sacrifice to the demon they served. The death was not quick.
Ruby was sent to Hell, a place of darkness and torture. She suffered unimaginable torment for a very long time, and she lost her humanity and soon took up the torture herself in order to be taken off "The Rack".
Ruby was sent to the surface to find Sam Winchester. Her orders were to get close to Sam and Dean to steer Sam's course in a certain direction. She appeared in the Winchesters' lives mysteriously and saved Sam from being killed by the Seven Deadly Sins using a knife that could kill demons. This piqued Sam's curiosity about her, but she remained mysterious for quite some time. When she did appear, her advice was cryptic and Dean didn't trust her one bit.
After helping Sam find out more about his past and his alleged destiny, Ruby revealed that she was a demon, but claimed to be one of the good guys. She and Sam began to work together to help one another, and Ruby also helped Bobby restore the Colt. Sam began to trust her more as she continued to help, though Dean remained suspicious. She continued to fight alongside the brothers while they tried to fend off Lilith and to save Dean from going to Hell.
Ruby told Sam that he had the power to defeat Lilith, but before she could explain further Dean trapped her in a Devil's Trap and stole her knife. Ruby was able to escape and follow Sam and Dean to Lilith's current residence, but in trying to help them defeat her Ruby's host became possessed by Lilith. Ruby and Dean were both sent to Hell, leaving Sam devastated.
In Hell, Ruby managed to gain Lilith's trust and she was sent back to the surface to kill Sam. She agreed, but once she was free she instead began helping Sam.
After Dean's death, Ruby returned in a new host and found Sam once again. She managed to procure a body of an unidentified woman in a coma and began training Sam, strengthening his powers. When Dean was resurrected, Sam refused to tell him about what he and Ruby had been doing. Ruby began laying low, not wanting to be killed by an angel. She continued training Sam in secret and helped the brothers when she could. Sam trusted her a great deal, but Dean still did not.
After Ruby aided in killing Lilith, preventing the seals from breaking and freeing Lucifer, Sam's trust in her grew stronger, while Dean distrusted her all the more.

It was dark outside. It had been raining all day, and at night it was no different. The sky was just black instead of gray. Ruby hated nights like this. The darkness didn't bother her, but the rain was a pain in the ass. She wasn't a fan of stepping outside and getting drenched.
Ruby sighed as she pulled the car she'd procured into the motel parking lot. The windshield wipers were going non-stop, but somehow the glass managed to stay coated in water droplets.
She parked the car and sat for a moment, staring out the windshield with the engine running, looking past the wipers to the motel. It didn't look like the rain was going to let up anytime soon.
"Great," she muttered, turning off the wipers and shutting off the ignition.
With an exhasperated sigh, she opened the door and got out of the car, the cold rain hitting her the second her feet touched the ground. She slammed the door shut and walked quickly toward the building, stopping once she got to the long covered porch. Raking a hand through her dripping hair, she walked along the porch, glancing at the room numbers on every door she passed until she found the one she was looking for. She paused in front of it and smirked. She could picture Sam and Dean sitting inside, Sam staring at his computer while Dean made sarcastic comments, or whatever it was he did.
Still smiling, Ruby knocked sharply. She forced the amused smirk away and her features settled into a bit of a scowl as she waited, folding her arms across her chest. The door opened a crack and she saw a sliver of Sam's face: a hazel eye and a bit of forehead He sighed and she heard Dean call, "Who is it?"
Sam opened the door a little wider, giving her a broodingly puzzled expression before looking back to Dean and opening the door, stepping aside. Ruby could see Dean sitting on the edge of the bed. He stood and gave her a very forced, very fake smile.
"Ruby. What a surprise," he said. "I'd say it's good to see you, but, let's not kid ourselves."
"Well, hello to you too," Ruby said, stepping past Sam and walking inside.
"What do you want, Ruby?" Sam asked as he closed the door behind him.
"Oh, you know, just dropping by to say hi, see what you guys are up to." She paused. "We could go with that, but let's not kid ourselves," she said, glancing at Dean.
"Funny," Dean muttered. "Seriously, though. What are you doing here?"
Sam and Dean both gave her hard stares and she rolled her eyes.
"Okay, just so I'm clear, here, while I've been running around trying to stop the world from ending, you guys are camping out in 'Oh, Look, A Cow', Nebraska playing Mulder and Scully." She laughed. "Wow. Way to over-acchieve, you guys, really."
Didn't these guys remember what the big picture was? Sam was the key to everything. Didn't they see that? The angels were trying to make Dean their little 'Chosen One' or whatever when Sam was the one who could change everything. But instead of doing what they were supposed to, they were messing around with ghosts and curses.
Dean took a few steps toward her. "Well what would you like us to do, Ruby?" he asked. "I really wanna know. I mean, I got angels tellin' me I gotta stop this, but they're givin' me squat to go on. Then you come around and bitch at us for doing our jobs. What have you been doing? Last I heard Lilith's breakin' seals like it's her job."
"Uh, it kind of is her job," Sam muttered.
"Whatever," Dean said. "I'm trying to make a point."
Ruby rolled her eyes. "Look, if you guys wanna sit here and have a bitch-fest, go ahead. I just wanted to let you know that there's talk about your little angel pals. And it's not exactly flattering."
Sam looked at her curiously. "What do you mean?"
Ruby smirked. Oh, so now they wanted to hear what she had to say. Funny how their tune could change so quickly.
"Word on the street is there's trouble in paradise, so to speak," she said. "Some of the higher-ups are breaking all the rules."
"Woah, woah, woah," Dean said, holding up his hands. "So we're supposed to trust a demon who heard through the evil-sons-o'-bitches grapevine that the angels are going renegade?" He glanced at Sam and shook his head. "Hate to break your heart, sister, but I don't buy it."
Ruby shrugged. "Hey, believe what you want. I'm just trying to give you a heads-up. Maybe next time Castiel sends you on one of your errand-boy missions you can ask him what the deal is. 'Cause, you know, he's totally gonna tell you the truth." Her tone was overly cheery and dripping with sarcasm. "Anyway, that's what I got. Take it or leave it, but I got things to do, so I'm sure you won't mind if I get gone."
No one objected when she left the room, heading back out in the downpour. She hadn't expected them to, but she knew she'd given them something to mull over. They'd look into it. Sam trusted her enough to at least consider her advice and Dean didn't trust the angels. That much she knew. She sighed, staring out at the rain from the porch, before walking quickly to her car.
