Friday nights were always busy at The Rabbit's Rest. Couples came here to stare at the odd people who were there every day, single people came in to find an interesting lay. Then there were the hunters. They usually filtered in late at night, startled and out of place. It was pretty simple to tell them apart from the normal crowd; They walked with more purpose, wore clothes with a bit more wear and tear, and overall didn't trust anybody. The hunters seemed to like to keep to themselves.
"Ey, Hatter! Grab a drink for me and Gunnar, will ya?"
Mad Dee was startled out of her people-watching trance by one of her usual customers. She threw Joey a smile and tipped her fedora before reaching under the counter. "Sure thing, Love. Give me a smidge." Maddy poured two glasses of whiskey, sliding them down the bar and into the men's hands. They smiled and raised their glasses in a silent thanks. Attempting to look mildly busy, Maddy grabbed an empty glass and started wiping it down with a checkered rag. She watched in amusement as a girl decked out in cyberpunk gear started to hit on a raggedy looking hunter. Busy as it was, it seemed as if tonight would be simple.
Hayley looked at the caller ID on her cell; it was her uncle again. She knew he was calling to make her back down from the hunt. Not that ghost hunts was out of the ordinary, not for Hayley. As far as Hayley’s research went, it was a haunting in an old house; two teenagers had been hurt and spooked by something. It wasn’t the first time Hayley had deled with ghosts, but her uncle didn't seem to like it anyway (like always). She didn’t pick up her phone but decided to let her voice mail deal with him. One thing Hayley hated was giving up, and this was exactly what her uncle wanted her to do.
This was one of the reasons Hayley found herself at some strange looking bar called The Rabbit's Rest. She preferred backup over having to give up. She flipped through the pages of her brother’s diary one more time; this had to be the place. She pushed the door open and walked in. Hayley looked around and was pleased to see she didn’t attract too much attention. She was wearing a pair of pants, slightly baggy and in a dusty army green color, and a lose blouse with some text. The only thing that might attract some suspicious glances was the three big books she carried under her arm.
"Ey, Hatter! Grab a drink for me and Gunnar, will ya?"
Hayley looked at a girl pouring some liquor up for the two men. The girl looked like she was about the same age as Hayley, but something about the other girl, gave Hayley the chills. Maybe it was because the girl looked a little too skinny. Hayley sat down and tried to catch the girls attention. “Excuse me, a diet coke please..” she said in a soft voice, not wanting to seem rude. According to Evan’s diary, a lot of experienced hunters hung around this bar, last time her brother had been there. Hayley just needed to get over herself and ask one of them for help. She looked over at the female bartender to see if she had heard her, while she opened one of her books to read.
She had no clue on local legends, and Hayley mumbled some few swears and bit her lip. The books offered no help whatsoever, and she knew she would have to do some digging that didn’t involve books.

Maddy looked around for the sound of the voice that had called. It was so quiet, unlike the rest of the patrons. Deciding that the one reading a book in the middle of the counter had been the one to order it. The witch quickly filled a glass with soda from the fountain, choosing to dance her way over to the girl with her nose in her book. She hummed a little tune and stuck her tongue out at the people she passed. As usual, most of them waved or bowed, some scowled, and some laughed. Such was the life of Mad Dee Hatter.
"Aaaaand a fizzy for the lovely lady, hm?" Maddy smiled and placed the drink a comfortable distance away from the book. Wouldn't want to destroy it, now would we?
The young woman in front of her wasn't anything to sniff at. Pretty, from what it seemed, taller than Mad Dee (DANGIT), and a bit worried. She didn't seem to be the type to be in a bar. The witch propped her head up on both of her hands, placing her elbows on the counter in front of her customer. "What's got you so interested here, hm? You'll draw attention to yourself if you read in a bar, love." Mad Dee's eyes never left the girl's face. She figured it would be rude to read the woman's book in front of her. Besides, Maddy was the last person who would want to out someone else's secrets.
The female bartender must have heard her. From the corner of her eye, Hayley spotted her dance in her direction. She looked around in the bar but couldn’t see anyone who might be hunters. Of course not; experienced hunters were the types that tried to attract as little attention as possible. Dancing girl came closer and Hayley couldn’t help but smile, as the joy of the other person seemed to rub off on her.
"Aaaaand a fizzy for the lovely lady, hm?" The female bartender said before placing the drink near Hayley. She smiled greatfully as she saw the soda was placed some distance away from the books.
Hayley finally got a good glimpse of the female bartender. She had been right; she was around her height, maybe a little shorter than Hayley herself and the other female was definitely around the same age. The female bartender placed her elbows on the counter and spoke again; "What's got you so interested here, hm? You'll draw attention to yourself if you read in a bar, love." the bartender said and the young hunter's smile grew a little wider from the other female’s way of approaching her.
Even though one of the books had been wide open, the bartender had been polite enough not to read along. Hayley smiled and frowned a little, as she closed the book she had been reading. “It’s nothing really, just some old local legends” that she’ll probably ask about now that you mentioned it.. dork.. she added in her mind. “I’m a member of the PPA. I’m conducting local stories and evidence of the paranormal” she said, trying to sound as convincing as possible.
It wasn’t a perfect lie, but not a bad one either. She was not a member of the PA paranormal association, and she wasn’t sure they were working across the state lines, but right now, Hayley couldn’t come up with anything else. She tried to keep up her smile, hoping the female bought her story. Hayley found the newspaper clipping about the teenagers and showed it to the bartender.
“The teens wrote to us about the place some time ago. We chose not to look in to it, but because of this incident, we have chosen to check it out” she explained in a strong voice. “If you are familiar with the area, could you please show me on a map? I can’t seem to find the place” Hayley said in a polite voice. Actually, this was one of the lies she used the most; being a member of PA paranormal association and sometimes the T.A.P.S family. In this way, she could speak more or less open about the case she was working at, without actually telling people about real ghosts and demons and all.

It was a clever lie, Maddy would give her that. A normal bartender would believe it. If the Hatter didn't know any better, she would have as well. One of the best tricks that hunters had was the 'paranormal investigator'. The normal rabble wouldn't question it, and hunters would question if they were actually dealing with other hunters, or people who thought they knew what they were doing. Clever. A slight snicker escaped the barkeep, something she tried to cover with a cough.
"Why yeeeee~s. I have heard of these teenagers. Interesting bunch, them." Mad Dee scratched the back of her head, glancing around the bar. "Lot of people been asking around 'bout them, in fact." She threw the woman a glance before pushing off of the bar. A mischievous smile colored her face.
"As for the house, I'll tell you where it is, if you let me give you a ride over." Mad Dee hadn't been out in a while. Nowadays, she stuck to giving information and pointing people in the right direction. But what was life without a little adventure? Besides, it's not like a little hunt on the side would hurt her. "I assure you, I will not kidnap you or anything. I'm not some creepy old man."
"Why yeeeee~s. I have heard of these teenagers. Interesting bunch, them." the bartender said and Hayley had a weird feeling of being busted or something. As the bartender looked around the bar, Hayley took a sip of her soda. "Lot of people been asking around 'bout them, in fact." the bartender said and smiled mischievous. ‘Great.. Does this mean my babysitter has arrived or is it some sort of coincidence?’ Hayley asked herself mentally and took another drink, as she listened to the bartender.
She nearly choked in the coke when the other female suggested coming along in return for showing the house. "I assure you, I will not kidnap you or anything. I'm not some creepy old man.", “Oh no, I would bore you to death. I’m just going to record some EVP and make some other stuff” Hayley said quickly.. too quick. She had to fix this, but the only way she could think of, was by letting the bartender come along. ‘guess it’s better than nothing’ Hayley thought and bit her bottom lip.
“You know what? I could use some local help” she finally gave in and smiled warmly. Hayley started to gather her books and found her wallet, so she could pay. “I just need to know what time you’re off from work. We need to do it at night, if you don’t mind. It creates fewer disturbances, you see. By the way, my name is Natalie” Hayley said, deciding to use her middle name. Her uncle had taught her to use different names when working a case. If she ever got in trouble, she’d be more difficult to track down.
Her phone vibrated in her pocket and Hayley made a little surprised jump. She didn’t need to look at the display to know it was her uncle, again. She smiled apologetic at the bartender; “would you mind? It’ll only take a second” she said before she slid her index finger over the screen to pick up.
Ten minutes to go. Hayley had been sitting by her spot at the bar the entire night, watching how people got drunk and left. She’d talked to her uncle and had reassured him that she wasn’t going to work this case.. She had lied. “Come on” she begged the clock and looked at the watch again. Six minutes. It felt like time was passing by more slowly than usual. Five minutes. ‘Come on!’ She begged again, this time in her head. She was ready to go, she just needed her guide.
The day had gone into night like any other. Hatter watched as Ed (the bouncer) had to remove a few people too drunk to function. She wrinkled her nose at them as they left. It was one of the worst parts of working in the bar, seeing people shitfaced. Reminded her too much of things better left forgotten. Once three o' clock rolled around, Maddy was out of the bar faster than she had ever been. Spotting Natalie over by the door, she smiled and waved her over. "C'mon Nat. My car's over this way."
Her car. It was less of a car and more of a mural. It was a 1964 Volkswagen Bus, and it was the Hatter's baby. It had a hippie painted across the front, galaxies and various swirls painted across it. Peace signs littered the stars, blending with them. The car itself showed signs of age, a spot of rust or a dent on the bumper. "This is it." Hatter patted the front of it approvingly, smiling softly. "If you'd jump up into shotgun, that'd be great." The actual body of the car housed a variety of things. Shag carpeting, herbs, jars of salt, and a variety of other spell components. There was a screen between the front of the cab and the back, making business quite a bit easier.
Once she was sure her client was safely strapped into the car, Hatter pulled out of the driveway and started West. "First off, you're not looking for a house. It's a Spaghetti Warehouse." She smiled and glanced over at Natalie, getting onto a highway. "The place has been haunted for years. Teenagers are known to go in there at night to see if they can catch a glimpse of The Cowboy."
The backpack with all her hunter gear was still in her car. “C'mon Nat. My car's over this way.” Hatter said and tried to wave her over. Hayley smiled to herself and opened the trunk of her smartcar. It didn’t take long before she had gathered her stuff, and she headed towards the old retro looking hippie bus. As much as the car looked like.. (Hayley couldn’t come up with a word to describe the car).. as much it seemed like Hatter loved it. “This is it.” Hatter told, and Hayley chose to keep her mouth shut, as she didn’t wish to insult her temporary partner. For some reason, she was pretty sure she wanted to follow Hatter’s advice and she jumped into the car, on the copilot seat.
As the car pulled out from the driveway, she noticed they headed west. Hatter’s voice broke the silence in the car; "First off, you're not looking for a house. It's a Spaghetti Warehouse.". Hayley turned her attention away from the window and looked at Hatter’s smile. Was the other girl serious? A Spaghetti Warehouse? She was about to ask, when the bartender from The Rabbit’s nest explained further; "The place has been haunted for years. Teenagers are known to go in there at night to see if they can catch a glimpse of The Cowboy.".
A soft sigh escaped her lips. “Is the place abandoned? Sorry, I’ve only read the articles and they are not really detailed, as nothing major happened” Hayley said and started to check her backpack: EMF meter, EVP recorder, rock salt, a medium sized iron pipe, ½ gallon gas can (with gasoline) and her lighter. This seemed like a smooth case, if it hadn’t been for her partner. In her mind, Hayley wondered how she was going to tell the other girl about the burning of the corpse, and the actual ghost..
“Are we there yet?” She asked and looked out the window. They had been driving for some time and she started to feel impatient. The bus smelled like a weird mix of herbs, and Hayley wished to roll down a window to feel the cold air. They drove off the highway, and the surroundings started to look more like she had imagined. When the car finally stopped, the building made the female hunter widen her eyes. In the dim light it looked big and nearly threatening. “So.. a teenage throwing Cowboy ghost in there” she said and looked at the building.
Her guts told her that this case wasn’t as smooth as she had thought.
Hatter glanced over at the girl in her passenger seat as she rooted through her bag. A small smirk appeared on her lips as she explained all she knew about the Spaghetti Warehouse. "Yeah, the place has been empty for years. Back in the old days, the place was a ranch, and then became a place to store produce, and then a Spaghetti Warehouse. I don't know the name of the guy who owned the ranch, but I bet he's the Cowboy." The witch paused to put the car in park in front of the abandoned building. Maddy looked to Natalie, smiling widely at her and motioning to her bag. "Got the salt?"
Without a moment's pause, she was out of the car and opening the side door. While the witch shoved chalk, a couple pouches and various herbs and trinkets into her jacket pockets, she briefly mused about her 'partner'. Mad Dee wondered how long she had been in the business. Not a question for now, of course. The door was shut before Natalie could get around to see in the back of the van.
"I don't think the spirit will hurt us if we keep our nose out of a lot of things. If we just get in, find the body, and get rid of it we should be fine." It wasn't common knowledge that Mad Dee was a witch. It was common knowledge, however, that she knew what she was doing. She motioned to the front door, then to a fire escape. "We can split up, one of us taking the basement, the other on the balcony. Or, we could go together to be safe. Your choice."
Busted? Hayley sure felt like it when Hatter mentioned the salt. She got out of the car, considering her possibilities; she decided to figure out how much Hatter actually knew, as her comment about the salt had left the huntress wondering. “Yeah and some gasoline for when we are going to burn the body” she said in a joking tone. If Hatter didn’t know about hunting, Hayley could always tell it was no more than a bizarre joke. She thought about her temporary partner’s words about the house; if the place were abandoned, they should be able to get in the same way as the teenagers. “I told you, I’m doing some EMFs and EVPs, that’s all” she said as Hatter closed the backdoor to the van.
She stopped as she heard Hatter’s next words and decided that this girl defiantly knew about hunting. The ghost (or the thing that had hurt the teenagers) had according to the local newspaper been quiet aggressive, and Hayley felt sure that by entering its domain, they would trick is wrath or annoyance. ‘But what do we do, if the body isn’t buried here?’ she thought without speaking the words out loud. Hayley felt nervous and tense as Hatter motioned for the fire escape and front door. Splitting up didn’t seem like a wise idea and the huntress shook her head slightly; “We’re staying together.. I’m not taking any chances” ‘you’re kinda my responsibility’ she added in her mind. Her steps were a little hesitant as she walked towards the front door.
It took a moment for Hayley’s eyes to adjust properly to the darkness. Why did this place suddenly look more dark and threatening after the light from the car had been turned off? “I’d say we start in the basement.. Seems like the most obvious place to bury a body” she mumbled and turned the handle. The door went up with a loud noise, and she made a face. She looked back at Hatter and her eyes shifted back to the building. Something moved at the balcony.. Hayley was pretty sure. “Please tell me you saw that too?” she whispered not moving her gaze way from where she had seen what had seemed like a white skirt.
This called for a quick decision and Hayley took a deep breath. “We’re taking the balcony first. I’m sure I saw someone up there, and we need to make sure it’s not some lost teenager” She said, still speaking in a low voice, not wanting the person at the balcony to hear them.
Of course this girl would pick the basement. Hatter vowed silently to herself that she wouldn't step foot down there if there wasn't any source of light. The last thing she needed was a mental breakdown in front of a hunter. Her reputation (the little one she had) would go right out the window. That, and Natalie would probably leave her there in the dark, either too freaked out or uncaring to take the witch with her. The witch frowned as Natalie opened the door. "Yeah, sure....I guess."
As soon as the door swung open, Maddy saw a woman on the balcony staring straight at them. Translucent, clothed in a white gown, and rather tall. When the door hit the wall with a bang, she turned quickly and ran farther onto the balcony.
“Please tell me you saw that too?"
"Yeah. You're not insane. I don't think it's a teenager though." Maddy walked into the spacious building, purposefully avoiding any corners or shadows that looked a bit dark to her. She didn't dare look into them. The witch gently kicked a metal staircase to make sure it was stable before motioning to Natalie. "We should be able to get up this way." She hoped that the strange attraction that spirits had to her would make this job simple. If she could get them close enough, Nat could do her little hunter thing, and they would be out of there in no time. The witch paused once she reached the balcony, waiting for her hunter companion to catch up. She reached into her jacket and curled her hand around a small pouch filled with salt. If the spirit was going to harm her, she'd at least be ready for it.
Down below them, a male form appeared in the far corner. He was tall and slim, decked out in rugged cowboy gear. He felt hatred at the women snooping around on his property. The cowboy smiled, something that could barely be seen. They would end up better than the boys, he suspected. No. He knew. He would make sure they got what was coming to them.
It was probably stupid, but Hayley nodded as a response to Hatter’s words, not knowing if the bartender saw it in the dark. The staircase looked more like a rusty death trap than anything else and Hayley waited till her companion was all the way up, before hesitantly climbing the thing herself. The staircase gave away a lot of noise, and Hayley tried to calm herself. After all, she was supposed to be the pro ghost hunter and not some wimp who chickened out over a rusty staircase death trap.
When she finally reached the balcony, she looked around. No trace of the person she had seen, which could only mean one thing: A ghost. But was it the same ghost that had attacked the teenagers? The place looked like it had a lot of history, and it wouldn’t surprise her if there were more than one spirit hunting it. But how would they find the right one? She needed to figure that out later. In her backpack, she found her EMF-meter and instantly it went crazy, clearly a sign on recent ghost activity.
“Here we go” she mumbled to herself and looked over at Hatter to explain. “This is an EMF-meter.. it measures electromagnetic fields and they’re believed to indicate paranormal activity, maybe even the unseen presence of a ghost - or so the clever people says. So either a ghost is nearby or they have some big ass washing machine in there” she said and pointed the EMF-meter against the door. She took the door handle, but of cause it wasn’t open. “Rotten wood.. hmm” she said and frowned softly, leaning her head to the site and looked at the door. She took a quick diction, as she knew that this would either make her foot hurt badly, or it would open the door. She took a step back and gave the door a solid kick under the handle.
It hurt like hell, and she made a face and clenched her fist (the hand that didn’t hold the EMF-meter). The door slid back and was open. She walked inside and bit her lip to avoid limping before she motioned for Hatter to follow. "Remember to be quiet.. I think I made enough noise to attract some ghosts, but for now, we wanna keep it low, to avoid pissing off any spirits" she whispered over her shoulder to Hatter. She looked at the room in front of her and froze. A woman with long black hair and hollow eyes, dressed in a long while dress was staring right at her, looking utterly surprised.
Hatter followed Natalie and listened to her explain the EMF meter. It wasn't a new device to the witch, but it wasn't something she needed, either. She didn't understand why the hunters used most of the things they did instead of learning a little witchcraft.
"Remember to be quiet.. I think I made enough noise to attract some ghosts, but for now, we wanna keep it low, to avoid pissing off any spirits"
"Yeah, yeah. I know the drill." Maddy was too preoccupied with looking for a light switch that she didn't realize how close Natalie was until she ran into her. "Oof! Hey, watch.....it." And there she was. The spirit she had seen earlier, standing with a sort of ethereal beauty. Of course, normal people probably wouldn't think that. The shocked expression on her pale face only added to her gruesome appearance. To Hatter? The woman was a nice change from the disfigured spirits she dealt with most of the time. The woman in white spun to run through a wall.
"Wait! We just want to talk!" Hatter threw her hands up defensively, opening them and dropping her salt packets. Shit.
For a moment, Hayley was confused. Hatter knew the drill? Maybe she had heard hunters talk about stuff like this before and maybe this was why she knew. Her new partner had bumped in to her, as she looked at the woman, frozen, and Hayley took a step, nearly stepping into the ghost.
"Oof! Hey, watch.....it."
Ignoring the outburst seemed like the right thing to do at this time. The woman looked just as surprised as Hayley felt like their eyes were locked in some weird way. Suddenly the woman spun and ran against the wall. Hayley blinked and felt weird; she was sad, but not on her own behalf, but sad for the woman with the long white dress. Something about her had seemed so desperate and scared that she couldn’t help but feel pity for the ghost. The steps of the spirit weren’t even audible and somehow Hayley doubted that the woman in white knew she was dead.
"Wait! We just want to talk!"
The spirit stopped at Hatter’s words and looked at them. Again, Hayley felt mesmerized by the dark and sorrow filled eyes. “Hatter is right, we just want to know what happened to those kids there were here” She said in a soft tone, not wanting to scare the lady. Too late, as her temporary partner dropped the bag of salt, the woman in white’s eyes grew suspicious and the spirit looked coldly at them. “Do-don’t worry.. we won’t harm..”. She didn’t even finish her sentence before the woman had disappeared through the wall. “Shoo” Hayley mumbled and bit her lip - this was not good. She wanted to ask Hatter if there was a possibility that this place had more than one ghost, as she somehow had a feeling that this wasn’t the ghost they were looking for.
The young huntress took some careful steps, deeper in to the dark place and used her flashlight to make sure she didn’t stumble over something. She motioned for Hatter to follow her and started to make her way to what looked like a staircase leading downstairs. The floor made cracking noises, but Hayley ignored it.
The man didn’t even have to materialize to make the Woman in White flee - she could see him, just as clear as he could see her. He smirked and followed the brunette with the long curly hair as she walked to the stairs. These women had broken in to his place, and they had brought salt? He knew what they were up to and he had decided to stop them. He didn’t even need to push her, he just materialized right behind her as she was about to turn around
Hayley’s EMF-meter was going more and more crazy as she got close to the stairs. She stopped before she took the first step down. “Hatter, I think we need to go this way” she said and turned around. She widened her eyes and nearly screamed as she looked in to the eyes of a middle aged semi-transparent man. She fell down the first few steps of the staircase and held back her scream. “Hatter, watch out!” she yelled, as soon as she had gained control and stopped her fall.

The dark. Of course, the woman in front of her had to lead her further into the freaking dark. The witch struggled to keep her pulse in check. Her instincts were urging her to turn around, to leave the building, and come back when it was light out. That, or start a fire. Of course, neither of those options were probable. Hands shaking, hearbeat racing, Hatter followed rather closely behind Natalie. The further down they went, the more... dangerous the place seemed. Hatter figured it was just because she was going down farther into the dark. That is, until, Hale looked behind the witch and screamed.
“Hatter, watch out!”
Everything happened in a blur. Natalie was tripping down the steps, the flashlight beam becoming erratic and casting more shadows than it chased away. Hatter spun in time to see the grin on his face, the glint in his eyes, before she was shoved down the steps. And she was laughing. Laughing and laughing and laughing because she was so scared and the dark was creeping up on her and this spirit shoved her and everything was just so damn terrifying. The cackling carried into the dark, up against a wall, the witch sliding down the grimy surface and to the floor. She could feel the spirit move towards her, rather than see him. Natalie was still struggling with the flashlight, with finding herself at the bottom of the stairs. Hatter could feel him rush over, the overwhelming wall of just anger and pain. She was laughing.
"Shut up!"
The witch ducked out of the way , receiving a scratch on her shoulder from the spirit. She had left her salt on the floor in the room upstairs. It was dark. It was so dark.
