Jo
Jo settled herself on the cushion of the futon. Pulling one leg up underneath her and leaning forward toward the coffee table. She couldn't help the little smile on her face. This was different. They hadn't really spent a lot of time just hanging out.
She watched as he took the cards and began to shuffle them. Raising an eyebrow she nodded when he told asked her if Texas Hold 'Em was OK with her.
"Yeah. That's sounds good to me."
Jo took another drink of her beer then set the bottle down on the table. She picked up her stack of bills and rifled through them for a moment. Doing a quick rough count of what she had before she set the cash back down in front of her. Glancing across the table at Greg she grinned at him.
"This is going to be good. You can tell a lot about a person by how they play poker you know."
Still grinning she waited for Greg to deal out the cards.
Greg shuffled while Jo counted her money. He hadn't really pictured her working until tonight. Until now he'd sort of had this weird idea of her waking up every day and carrying a shotgun and a lock pick set to the next hunt, stopping to eat or sleep occasionally. It was unrealistic, sure. It wasn't like she was a robot. But he only knew her from the one hunt, so he didn't have much to go on.
"This is going to be good. You can tell a lot about a person by how they play poker you know," Jo said.
Greg smiled.
"I'll take your word for it," he said.
He dealt a card to her, a card to himself, a card to her, and another to himself. Once they each had two pocket cards he placed the remainder of the deck in the center of the table.
"Alright, ante up, sister."
He smiled, nodding to her pile of cash, before sliding his beer across the table to take a swig.
Jo watched as Greg dealt the cards out to each of them. She waited until she got both her cards before she did anything. Jo brought the cards closer to her, stacked them on top of each other then carefully lifted the edge of one card and then the other. Getting a quick peek at her hold cards. She had a the queen and jack of hearts.
Jo looked up from her cards and couldn't help but chuckle when Greg said,
"Alright, ante up, sister."
Moving her hands from her cards to her money she peeled a dollar bill off the top. Raising and eyebrow she gave Greg a look and slapped the bill down in the middle of the table.
"I'm in."
Taking her hand off the money she reached over and grabbed her beer again. Taking a good long swig from the bottle and giving Greg a smirk.
Jo twirled the beer bottle around in her hands slightly as she wondered a little bit about Greg. She didn't know much about him. He had been pretty quiet about his personal life for the most part when they worked the hunt in New Orleans. She had learned earlier that he was a bartender and he had an uncle he used to live with.
From their time in Louisiana she had learned he had been hunting for about four or five years and that he had a roommate that had turned out to be a werewolf. Which, Greg had subsequently had to kill because the dude attacked him. That was about it as far as her information file on Greg Marsh.
Bringing the beer bottle up to her lips she took another drink. Waiting as Greg made his determination whether he was in this hand or not.
Greg watched Jo look at her cards as he drank his beer. He watched her expression, trying to look for any kind of indicator of how good of a hand she had. He didn't get one.
Jo slapped a dollar down in the middle of the table when he told her to ante up. He realized he'd probably sounded like a dork, but she didn't seem to mind, so there was no point in being embarrassed.
"I'm in," Jo declared.
Greg smirked and put his beer down to take a look at his own cards. A two of clubs and an ace of spades. Not the greatest pocket cards, but an ace was okay. He grabbed a dollar from his pile and tossed it on top of Jo's.
"Alright, let's get this party started."
Greg pulled the first card off the top of the deck and placed it face down on the table before flipping the next three cards face up on the table. He dealt a king of hearts, a jack of clubs, and a three of diamonds.
"Your bet."
Greg ran a hand through his hair, wondering if he should fold.
Jo's eyes followed the movement of Greg's hand as he laid the cards out on the table between them. As they flipped over, first the king of hearts, next the jack of clubs and finally the three of diamonds.
Without changing her expression or looking at her hold cards again Jo took a sip of her beer and assessed her hand. With the king of hearts showing, she had three cards of a straight flush or even a possible royal straight flush, the highest hand you could get. But... that was really just a tease. What she had at the moment was a semi-solid pair of jacks.
The possibilities of what could beat her went through her mind. She had the second highest pair possible as far as the board went, but who knew what Greg was holding. He could have a king or even a pair of pocket aces, kings, queens, jacks, or even a pair of threes hidden in there would beat her hand with that three on the table. There were two more cards to come though and her hand was pretty solid.
Now she just had to think about how much to bet. She wanted to maximize her possible winnings while minimizing what she might lose. She took another drink of the beer and looked across at Greg. Giving him a smile.
"You know, we've never really got to talk much. I kind of feel at a disadvantage here. I mean hell... you've met my mother. That had to leave an impression on you."
Jo let out a little bit of a laugh as she paused. Yeah, her mother could definitely make an impression.
"What about you, your family?"
Jo set her beer back down on the table again. Then she took an unnecessary peek at her cards and took another moment or so to mull over her options.
"I'll bet another dollar. I'd like to see what you've got over there."
Start out slow she thought. One dollar was a pretty safe bet right now.
Between the flop and the pocket cards, Greg had jack shit for a hand. He had a king and an ace in consecutive order, but they weren't the same suite. The jack and the two were both clubs, but that didn't really mean much, did it?
Jo took a sip of her beer and, again, Greg tried to read her expression. Nothing until she looked at him and smiled.
"You know, we've never really got to talk much. I kind of feel at a disadvantage here. I mean hell... you've met my mother. That had to leave an impression on you."
Greg smiled. Ellen Harvelle certainly did leave an impression. Then again, so did Jo.
"What about you, your family?"
Jo put down her beer and looked down at her cards thoughtfully. What did that mean? Did she have something or didn't she?
"I bet another dollar," Jo said. "I'd like to see what you've got there."
A dollar was pretty safe. Maybe she didn't have much. Greg grabbed his own beer and took a sip.
"What about my family?" he asked, tossing another dollar into the pile.
Greg didn't talk much about his family if he could help it. It wasn't a sore subject so much as an awkward one. His relationship with his family wasn't exactly pleasant or typical.

Jo
"What about my family?", Greg asked in return.
Jo arched an eyebrow and twisted her lips around in thought a bit. Looking across the table at him
"Well, you know. The basics, I guess. You mentioned an uncle you lived with. Are you close? Parents? Brothers, sisters?"
Jo watched him and waited for him to respond as well as for him to deal out the next cards. This could be interesting. She took another drink of her beer, then set the bottle down. Jo was still trying to get a handle on Greg. He didn't talk a lot. Not that he seemed to not want to talk, just that he didn't volunteer a lot of information. That told her a little. There was probably some things he didn't like to talk about regarding his family. She knew that feeling. Still, it seemed normal to ask him about it. How were they supposed to get to know each other if they didn't talk?
"Hey, you know what? We're missing something here. I think we need snacks. Want to order a pizza or something? You're supplying the beer, I'll buy the food, you got delivery around here right?"
People who answered a question with a question were annoying. Greg dealt with a lot of people like that when he went about doing any kind of research. It was usually a way to get out of answering a particular question, or at least stall before answering. Now Greg had sort of done it to Jo.
"What about my family?" he'd asked.
And as soon as he said it he thought, 'Damn. I just became one of those annoying people I hate.'
"Well, you know. The basics, I guess," Jo said. "You mentioned an uncle you lived with. Are you close? Parents? Brothers, sisters?"
Greg furrowed his brow thoughtfully. She wasn't pulling any punches. Most people had horror stories about their families they didn't like sharing, but Greg's were on a whole different level. He didn't even like to talk about his family to people he'd known for years. Like Annali. There were things even she didn't know.
"Hey, you know what? We're missing something here," Jo said. "I think we need snacks. Want to order a pizza or something? You're supplying the beer, I'll buy the food, you got delivery around here right?"
Greg smiled, a little relieved. He didn't want to get into a whole thing about his family this early on in his friendship with Jo.
"Yeah, sure," he said.
He stood up, bracing himself against the table for balance. He headed into the kitchen and dug around in one of the drawers. He pulled out a menu from one of the local pizza places and took it into the living room, handing it to Jo.

Jo
Jo frowned a bit as Greg seemed relieved she asked about snacks before he could answer her questions about his family. The whole family thing always is a crap shoot. You never know what has happened in a persons past. Jo knew that first hand whenever someone asked her about her dad. There are very few people who know the true story of her father's death. Hell, she wasn't even sure if she knew the complete true story. Some of it was relayed to her by a demon, so how the hell do you explain THAT to someone. Even someone who knows about the supernatural.
So... the segue to the snacks was something to give them both a little time. When Greg came back she tried to act like it wasn't a big thing and gave him a smile as he handed her a menu. Taking a glance through the menu. Pretty standard stuff for pizza place. She looked up from the menu at Greg.
"OK, looks good to me. What do you want to get? Anything special on your pizza? Do we need anything else?"
Post by Wil Marsh on Sept 20, 2010 22:06:00 GMT -8
Greg shoved his hands in his pockets while Jo looked through the menu. There was a bit of an awkward vibe between them at the moment. First an awkward silence after she'd asked him about his family, and now an awkward vibe now that she'd changed the subject and he'd, again, dodged her questions.
"Ok, looks good to me. What do you want to get? Anything special on your pizza? Do we need anything else?"
He shrugged.
"Oh, I love me some anchovies," he said. "Big, slippery ones."
He chuckled and shook his head.
"Seriously, I'm not really picky. Except I'm pretty sure pineapple doesn't belong anywhere near pizza."
Greg reached over the table to grab his beer and took a sip. Family was always something he avoided talking about. He was just wired that way - he couldn't help it. Whenever a conversation drifted toward a direction vaguely resembling his family he tended to run screaming away from it.
"My parents aren't... in my life," he said slowly. "My mom... well, things are complicated so I keep my distance. My dad died when I was fifteen, so... you know... I don't talk to him."
He smiled and winked.
"My uncle, Kyle, sort of breezes in and out. He's pretty cool. And I have a brother, Rhett. He's nineteen. We keep in touch, but he's closer to my mom than me so it's kind of hard."
Greg shrugged and took a long pull of his beer. There were other details, of course, but that was the basic layout of his family, which was what she'd asked for.

Jo
Jo looked up at Greg when he made the anchovies comment and rolled her eyes.
"Ewwwww. That's just just gross."
She smirked a little as he continued on then nodded her head as she moved to the edge of the futon. Finding her messenger bag she pulled out her cell phone and then settled back on the futon.
"OK, duly noted. No pineapple on pizza."
There was a pause then and Jo pulled the menu over found the phone number and dialed it. Quickly she ordered a large meat lovers pizza and a side of the cheesy bread sticks. She gave them the address that she had stored in her phone for Greg's place then hung up.
"It'll be about 30 minutes,"
she told Greg as she looked at him. She saw him grab his beer. He seemed to be thinking about something due to the expression on his face. Then he started to talk. Answering her question that she had assumed they were just going to avoid. She fiddled with the phone in her hand as she sat and listened to him.
"My parents aren't... in my life," he said slowly. "My mom... well, things are complicated so I keep my distance. My dad died when I was fifteen, so... you know... I don't talk to him."
Jo smirked when he winked at her. Shaking her head as he tried to put some levity into the topic of his father being dead. She could understand that. It was not something easy to talk about and not something she would press, at least not tonight. It was enough that he was sharing some information with her.
"My uncle, Kyle, sort of breezes in and out. He's pretty cool. And I have a brother, Rhett. He's nineteen. We keep in touch, but he's closer to my mom than me so it's kind of hard."
Jo arched a brow at Greg, a smile breaking out on her face.
"You have a brother named Rhett? As in Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind?"
Chuckling slightly she leaned over and put her phone back in her bag. Then got comfy on the futon again. Picking up her beer and taking another swallow.

Greg glanced at Jo as she raised a brow and smiled at him.
"You have a brother named Rhett? As in Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind?"
Greg smiled as she chuckled and he shook his head.
"No. Well, I don't think so, anyway. Though, it is my mom so you never know."
He shrugged.
"His real name's Everett. Rhett just kind of happened."
He debated on whether or not he should mention his name was actually William. The voodoo witch back in New Orleans had called him William and Jo hadn't mentioned it. At least, not that he remembered. Then again, he had been concussed at the time. He decided not to mention it, taking a sip of his beer while Jo put her phone away.
"You a Gone with the Wind fan?" he asked with a smirk.

Jo
Jo grinned and nodded her head as he explained about the whole name thing.
She watched him as it seemed like he was thinking. His face had that look like he was mulling something over in his head. She really didn't want this to be difficult or uncomfortable for him. While they were on the subject of names it did flash through her mind their time in New Orleans. Something the witch had said. She had called him William and he had gotten quite upset over that. Definitely not the tone she wanted for the evening. That subject was off the table for now as far as she was concerned.
"Yeah, mom's are like that I guess. Everett's a nice name. Greg's a good name too."
She looked back up at him when he commented on Gone With the Wind. Shaking her head as she chuckled.
"No, not really a fan. Just never really heard that name before and made me think of it. I'm more of an action or horror movie type of girl. Though, I like all kinds of movies really. It just depends. What about you? You like movies? What do you do for like to do? What do you do for fun?"
Jo decided to not go down the family road too much. But, she did learn that his mom was still around, he had an uncle and a brother and that his father had died. Something else they had in common it seemed. Losing their father when they were still kids. Another reason not to press into the family information right now. Getting into that territory would just put a damper on things. This was supposed to be fun. They were going to eat pizza, drink beer and play poker. No need for depressing pasts to pop up. She still felt the need to get to know him though. Like she wanted to keep the conversation going.
Post by Wil Marsh on Sept 21, 2010 17:57:02 GMT -8
Jo commented that Everett and Greg were good names. He shrugged a bit indifferently. He preferred Greg to William, it was true, but he didn't want to get into that whole thing. It had to do with issues with his dad he didn't like to talk about. Not without a lot of alcohol in his system, anyway.
He was surprised Jo had mentioned Gone with the Wind. He knew it was a movie involving some chick named... what was it, Scarlet? He thought it might have been a book, but he wasn't positive. That was about the entirety of his Gone with the Wind knowledge. Jo confirmed she wasn't a fan. He wasn't sure he believed her, but he didn't say anything.
"I'm more of an action or horror movie type of girl," she said.
Greg smirked a little and nodded. Why was he not surprised? He thought about it when she asked what kind of movies he liked and what he liked to do for fun. He shrugged.
"Movies with good special effects are always pretty cool," he said. "But I like all kinds. Comedy, historical, a little bit of drama, stuff with explosions."
He sat down on the floor on the other side of the table again, setting his beer down.
"As far as fun... I don't know. I used to like to go camping. I don't really anymore. I used to play football when I was a kid. Then my dad made me join the team. Took all the fun out of it. Now I mostly go to work, come home, have a beer, and fall asleep. Sometimes I play my guitar."
He discarded the top card on the deck, placing it face-down in the small pile on the table, and then dealt the next card for the hand face-up on the table: a ten of hearts.

Jo
Jo got more comfortable and relaxed as they talked. Besides the little bit of hesitation when the subject of family came up for Greg, everything seemed to be fine. It was nice to have someone to hang out with, in a decent apartment that was actually his home. Instead of endless nights on the road, staying in low rate motel rooms, alone.
It wasn't like you had a lot of company on the road when you were hunting. This was something Jo hadn't really thought about before she left to hunt on her own. Sure, sometimes you ran into other hunters that helped you out or you called someone up to assist you when you needed it. But, at the end of the day, you still ended up alone in your room. The problem with that for Jo was, she used to have a home.
Strange as it was. Home had always been the Roadhouse. She didn't really anticipate not being able to go back there when she needed to. But, her mom had made the ultimatium and Jo had made her choice. Now this was her life and she wasn't sure if she was ready to mend that bridge yet with her mother. No doubt her mother still would be dead set against her hunting, so what was she supposed to do? It did make her envy Greg though at the moment. Being able to have his own place and hunt on his own terms.
Greg's voice pulled her back out of her thoughts. She smiled as he continued on talking about what he did for fun. Nodding her head as she paid attention to what he said.
"You play guitar? That's cool. You'll have to show me sometime. I can sing a little, but you know. Just for fun."
Jo took a drink of beer as she sat back a little. Watching as they got back to the card game at hand. Greg dealt out another card. Another sip of beer as she saw the ten of hearts pop up. The wheels turning in her mind. Remembering what she had as her hold cards, queen of hearts, jack of hearts. Now out on the table was the king of hearts, jack of clubs, three of diamonds and ten of hearts.
Well, wasn't that something. King, queen, jack and ten of hearts. At the very least she had a pair of jacks. If Greg had a king in his hand, he could have her beat, or if he had an ace and the final flop card was an ace he had her too, unless of course it was the ace of hearts and then nothing could beat her hand. She also had the possiblity of a flush. There were a couple other possiblities Greg could have that could win, but she was in a pretty good position. She had to go with a bet here.
"Alright... I'm in with two bucks this time. Boy, stakes are getting high now huh?"
Jo gave him a grin and then took another long swallow of her beer, finishing off the bottle.
