Welcome to SU: Legacy, a next-gen Supernatural RP that takes place in the year 2040. The Men of Letters has expanded to include three base locations across the continental US. Angels and demons have gone mostly dormant but there are still supernatural evils lurking in the shadows. The legacies could use your help. Are you in?

Kate was surprised he took her up on the challenge. That amused him. He found it odd that people could put an offer on the table without expecting it to be accepted. It was one of the many things that amazed him and confused him about human beings. It also made them interesting.
Kate took a large swig of her drink. "Taking small sips?" she asked. "Afraid it will burn?"
A.J. smiled slightly at her little pun. She was so cute trying to make little jabs at him.
"I ain't afraid of a little heat," he told her. He took a long swig and put his glass down.
He asked, if they were to bet, what the stakes would be. She thought about this for a moment. He'd expected her to demand information. Hadn't that been what she'd wanted in the first place?
To his surprise, she asked him what he wanted from her. What a dangerous route to take when dealing wtih a demon. A.J. could think of several things to do with this one - not all of them pleasant from her perspective.
She seemed to feel conflicted as she sat there. She didn't really want to sit around talking with him, but she didn't want to leave either. There was a strong air of loneliness about her, which was something he could use.
"Oooh. Putting the ball in my court, huh?" He sat back in his chair and looked thoughtful. "Alright. How about a little game of truth or dare? I'll ask you if you want truth or dare. If you pick truth, I ask you a question and you have to answer honestly. If you decide not to answer, or not to answer honestly - and believe me, I'll know if you're lyin' - you gotta drink. If you pick dare, I dare you to do something. If you don't do it, or if you try to do it and fail, you gotta drink. And then you get to do the same with me."
It was the age-old game of Truth or Dare, except it gave you the option to opt out of a question or a dare and take a drink instead. By the end, one of them would be wasted. Given his host's high tolerance along with his demonic advantage, it probably wouldn't be him. Because of his heightened senses and the few abilities he had, he was able to keep a clear head for a longer period of time and even after the body was intoxicated, his own senses remained unclouded for quite a while.
But, he wasn't invulnerable to alcohol. Given this little lady's tolerance and enthusiasm for drinking, she stood a good chance.
Thinking over his idea for a game, she knew it was bad news. But yeah, at this point she didn't care anymore. She would just go along and see how things were going to turn out. It didn't really matter if you were wasted enough. Besides she could use somebody, she was feeling way to lonely tonight anyway. "Sure nice game and all" she answered "But you still haven't told what you want if you win." Most likely all he wanted was to get information about her. If he wanted it that bad he could just ask.
And he probably wanted her dead. Most demons wanted. Otherwise she would kill them, and somehow that got in the way of their survival. Letting a small smile play on her face, she actually thought it to be kind of funny. And as bad of a idea as it was to go ahead with this, she might as well go down swinging.
"You better have your question ready" she spoke. "You might want the truth, are you sure you can handle it?" Kate thougth he better, she didn't like the game to much already. She really wouldn't be able to handle bad questions tonight. She might get a bit violent if that did happen. Luckily it was far less crowded then it had been earlier that night.
A.J. could practically hear the warning bells going off in Kate's head. Bad idea, bad idea, bad idea.
That's too bad, he thought. He was fully expecting her to decline.
And then she said it sounded like a good game and asked what he wanted from her if he won. He was a bit surprised, but intrigued. A hunter going against his or her instincts in the presence of a demon was always an interesting thing.
"Truth be told, I haven't decided yet," he said. "What do you want if you win?" he asked. And then he added, "Other than sendin' my ass back to hell. 'Cause I'm not up for that little trip."
She asked if he could handle telling the truth.
"Sure I can," he said. "I just hope you can handle a dare or two."
“And why would you think I need a game to kick your ass?” Kate inquired from the demon across of her. “I’m perfectly able to do that without your help.” Looking into his eyes, she took a moment to form the words, what did she want. Nothing much really, what she wanted and pretty much just needed at the moment was some company. It was wrong to seek it here. With a demon. While she could probably meet enough humans to talk to. Though most human guys would be out for more. And that, she didn’t want.
Straying from the subject at hand, Kate collected her thoughts and came up with something to tell him. She couldn’t possibly tell the guy that she was lonely. “I know something fun” she smiled, if she played this the right way it could be so much fun “If I win this thing, I will even let you walk out of here, but then I want you to be my scout. When you get across of a interesting demon, you give me a call and I have some good information on a hunt.”
It would most definably be useful to have a demon going around bringing your attention to rather active demons. That’s the way to catch the fun hunts. The ones with the real challenge and bypass the boring salt and burns. “That’s my deal, now it your turn to throw it on the table.”
"And why would you think I need a game to kick your ass?" she asked. "I'm perfectly able to do that without your help."
"I'm sure you are," he said. He smirked. "But you're not kickin' my ass, so I'm guessin' I got lucky and caught you in a good mood. That or there's some other reason you don't feel like killin' me just yet."
And then he got that reason as she told him what she wanted from him if she won. She wouldn't kill him. She'd let him walk on out of the bar. But, she'd want him to help her out, tip her off if there was a demon worth hunting he came across. He gave it some thought as she told him it was his turn to decide what he'd want from her.
"It's all well and good to want me to help you out," A.J. said, "But how would you know if I decided not to tip you off?" Generally when he said he would do something, he did it, so he didn't like agreeing to things without knowing all the details. "I mean, that's a big favor you'd be askin' for. A demon ratting out other demons to the other side? Risky ain't even a good enough word for it."
He leaned back, pondering what he could possibly get out of this game if he won as he waited for her reply. Sex was always an option, but it didn't seem appropriate in this case. There had to be something more interesting he could get out of this.
Maybe I could take her out, he thought, almost cracking up at the thought. It wouldn't be a date, of course, but she could tag along with him while he did what he normally did - found people to torment in one way or anther for a night. How would she react to that? Then again, what would he gain from doing that?
He looked at her, studying her and trying to think of other options.
"I mean, that's a big favor you'd be askin' for. A demon ratting out other demons to the other side? Risky ain't even a good enough word for it." As A.J. leaned back, a smile appeared on Kate’s face. “Actually it’s a prize I’m claiming, not a favour I’m asking. Besides, the fun is all about risk” If he wanted things to be interesting he would have to take the risk. She was more than happy to hang the bait before him. And if he really was that interested in a game with a hunter, he wasn’t going to let it pass by that easy, would he?
No, Kate didn’t expect him to chicken out on her, humans did. But who would have guessed. It was the only thing she could think of that wouldn’t involve her past or the damaged bonds she still hang onto. She hadn’t thought her choice of words where going to have this effect on him. But clearly it did and he had her waiting for his prize. It seemed, he needed as much time to think of something worth the effort and the risk, as she had taken.
Well, she would gladly wait for him. She felt the effect of the drinks she had already consumed and was feeling more and more happy there was someone who would most likely still be listening to her, even if she would get drunk later. It had been some time now that someone stayed with her while she drunkenly rambled on and on about nothing. That was something she would only ever do drunk. She wasn’t the type to just keep on talking.
But that didn’t have to mean much. She was not the type to just go sit on a bar, but she had done it for the show. And she would never just talk to stranger out of nothing, but the job had changed her from how she had once been, it had become a part of her character. Most of what she put out to the world was nothing but a mere façade.
Kate pointing out that it wouldn't be a favor. It would be a prize she was claiming.
"Good point," A.J. said with a smirk. "That does make a difference."
He sat back in his chair, pondering what prize he'd want to claim if he won this match.
She was beginning to relax a bit, the alcohol taking a bit of its affect. He sensed an almost desperate loneliness from her that she may not even have been aware of. No wonder she'd been willing to play this little game.
"Okay, Kate," he'd said, having made his decision. "Since you seem to be itchin' to have me callin' you with tip-offs if you win, you might as well return the courtesy if I win. If you hear about a hunter in my area or trackin' me... or even a psychic or somethin', you let me know."
It wasn't nearly as fun as some of the other options he'd considered, but he didn't want to scare her off. And it seemed a fair enough request.
She got her answer as A.J. told her his price to claim. He wanted her to give him heads up if there was a hunter near him. Or even a psychic that she knew of. Well, that was fine with her. It didn’t bother her she would, in a way, be selling out other hunters. Come on, they are hunters. And as such they should always be prepared. And if they weren’t, they were lousy hunters to start with. Lousy hunters couldn’t be used and should stay back and let the real deal do the job in Kate’s opinion.
What got her attention more then his question, was that it didn’t seem his first choice. She really had no idea why. Maybe it was just her paranoia getting the best of her. That should be it. Pushing the idea away, it couldn’t really be. He was just playing with her. Like he was supposed to. She was the one not doing her job. Instead of barging in shooting this guys brain out and make a quick dash for it, so she got away from the cops. But here she was, drinking, chatting, playing games and making bets like they were old friends and drinking buddies. She shook her head. “Shame on me” she thought. “That would be fine, we are going to need phone numbers though.”
Apparently Kate had no qualms about throwing her fellow hunters under the bus. That was interesting. He didn't feel loyalty toward other demons, but he wasn't stupid. If he turned a hunter loose on a demon with powerful friends, well he could kiss his ass goodbye.
He smirked at her comment about exchanging phone numbers. "Hell, if my number's what you wanted all you had to do was ask." He laughed and leaned forward, his fingers around his glass. "Alright. We can work out the logistics later, but it looks like we have our terms. You win, I tip you off on demon activity. I win, you help me out by tellin' me if I got hunters on my ass. Deal?"
Deals with demons were always tricky. Deals weren't exactly his game - he left that to the ones who liked hang around Crossroads. But this wasn't soul-swapping, it was information.
He held out his hand for her to shake to make it somewhat official.
Okay, lady, last chance to back out while you can, he thought.
As A.J. extended his hand and asked her if they had a deal, Kate didn’t wait a moment to hesitate. She had known she was going along with this. No matter, the consequences. That had already been decided when she named her prize. Leaving no need to think it over again. She knew what she was doing, or at least she hoped that she did. The chance this would and in disaster was big. Huge really. But it had to be taken, cause she didn’t want to leave just yet.
“Deal” Kate said. It wasn’t like there was any need to say more. They were born enemies. Hanging around together went in against their nature. But they were here, staying around each other. Both with their own reasons and hidden agendas. While they should be far away from the other or be fighting to the dead. They weren’t, and it didn’t seem like they would.
They were playing their game. And they weren’t alone. It was something she needed. Maybe it was something he needed to. But she shouldn’t have let herself be would like this. It was a mask he wore. A meat suite. As much as he acted human and looked like it he wasn’t. She couldn’t let herself forget that. It would be wrong and a mistake. Not the first tonight probably. But it would be the most important one.
Seeing something supernatural as not evil would make a hunter go soft. Hunters couldn’t be soft. They were merciless and needed to do what they did, or people would die. Soft was not an option. That meant they were hunters who still had the hope they could life normal. Those hunters couldn’t really do their job. Sure, Kate dreamed of something like that, once in a while. But dreams and hopes are something different. Kate didn’t hope for normal. Or desired normal, a little less bloodshed sometimes.
He smiled. He hadn’t expected any other response. Kate had a bit of uncertainty about her that he picked up on, but it had nothing to do with whether she’d stay or go. That much he knew. She was conflicted, but also determined to prove something, to get something, to win. He had a feeling she was determined to do a lot of things.
"Alright then," he said with a nod.
He took a sip of his drink as he looked around the bar. Some people had cleared out while he and Kate were talking. The bartender eyed them every once in a while, but didn’t seem to want to interrupt. All around, there wasn’t much going on.
"Truth or dare?" he asked. "Unless you want to go first," he added.
He was a demon and already had several advantages, so it would only be fair for her to go first on the asking and daring end of things.
Ignoring his question if she wanted to go first she stated she wanted truth. Acting like a gentleman wouldn’t fool her no more. This wasn’t just mere talking and making sure not to spill anything to important. There was something of value at stakes now. While it wouldn’t be to bet if she lost, it be better for her if she’d win. And then there was pride. Being a hunter and losing to a demon. She would have a hard time getting herself over that one.
In Kate’s mind it would be safest to go with truth for now. See his style of the game before actually doing something. And the truth wasn’t even necessary, she could always skip. Or try to get away with lying. She was good at lying and if she got caught, well, it might be fun to see a wasted demon angry later on in the game. Who was to say?
Looking over to the bar as she waited for A.J. to speak his first question, she noticed that the bartender was starting to keep more and more of an eye on them. Not to much of course, probably scared to get in between them, but not wanting anything to happen that would cause chaos and scare the other costumers away. A smirk played on her face, she always enjoyed seeing people she disliked afraid of her. And she disliked a lot of people.
She couldn’t life without people that didn’t like her. While she needed some people to like her, to chase away the loneliness she sometimes felt, she loved to argue once a while. It conflicted with her normally introvert and calm character, she blamed it on stress of hunts that went wrong. Most went well, or she wouldn’t be here. But it happened enough to plaque a hunter and hunts certainly never went perfect.
Almost before A.J. had finished his sentence, Kate announced she'd pick Truth. A.J. raised his eyebrows in amused surprise.
"Eager beaver, huh?" he said with a dry chuckle, taking a sip of his drink. "Alright, let's see..."
This was interesting. He had offered to give Kate the upper hand by letting her have the first turn. Being a hunter, he'd expected her to take any opportunity she could to get the upper hand.
Instead, she'd ignored his offer. Maybe she was trying to prove she didn't need to be given the upper hand. He studied her for a moment as he pondered his question.
"Why'd you become a hunter?" he asked.
It wasn't exactly a challenging question, but for some hunters it was a difficult one to answer. Besides, one could tell a lot about a person with a little history.
(Sorry this took so long, Kate. Thanks for waiting)
Waiting to hear what it would be, he asked her why she wanted to become a hunter. That was a easy one. No, she hadn’t been on some kind of vengeance rampage. It simply run in the family to be hunters of the supernatural. Her family had the knowledge of what was really out there and were ready to use it. That was pretty much it. She had been raised by hunters. She was the fourth generation of her family to hunt demons and the likes. She knew what she was doing, she had been told the truth as a small child and couldn’t remember a time she had been unaware of it.
“It’s the family business.” She simply answered looking up at A.J. It was a short and simple answer, but it was her reason to be a hunter. And once your in too long, you wouldn’t be able to get out and live normal. That was her reason to stay. She was a hunter and a hunter is what she was.
Now the hard part of her turn came. She had no idea what to ask him. But she would have some time to think something up. Though she better make it worth her while. “Truth or Dare” she asked him and waited to her his answer. .
A.J. waited for Kate's answer, looking around at the other patrons in the bar. Some had left and others had filed in since they'd been talking. No one was doing anything interesting, though.
Kate told him that hunting was the family business. Short and sweet. He liked that. He wondered how long her family had been hunting. He didn't get the sense she was lying, or had any reason to. She asked him truth or dare and he thought for a moment.
"Dare," he said, smiling.
He wasn't much for giving away secrets or answering awkward questions. Action, though, that he could do.
