Personal Style (write a short paragraph): Ellen’s always been a bit of a tomboy. She can drink with the boys, fight with the boys, and she’s not one to get dolled up like a girly girl. She sticks mostly to jeans and t-shirts, although she has a few long-sleeved shirts and oversized casual button-ups. She’s got a collection of denim and leather jackets she wears interchangeably. She mostly wears boots and has several pairs – cowboy boots, zip-ups, leather, suede, and work boots. Personality (write a decent paragraph): From the time she was a little girl Ellen was always a bit of a tomboy. Now that she's a grown woman, she's definitely got feminine qualities and she can be very maternal. She tends to have more male friends than female, and is very much an "alpha dog". She's fun and easy going most of the time and she loves to laugh, but when she speaks she expects others to listen. She has a commanding demeanor and steps into the role of leader very easily. Ellen has a tough exterior and it can be difficult to get to know her, but she's the type of person who will do anything she can to help her friends and loved ones, so it's well worth it to work your way past her hard outer shell.
Family and Friends:Jo Harvelle (daughter), Sam Winchester (family friend), Dean Winchester (family friend), Bobby Singer (ally), Greg Marsh (ally).
Enemies and Rivals:Demons (particularly Meg), most monsters, some hunters with iffy habits.
History: Ellen was born in Nashville, TN in April, 1962. Her father, Joe, was not present during her birth because he was fighting in the Vietnam War overseas.
Over the next several years, Ellen's contact with her father was unstable and irratic as the war went on. She lived with her mother in Oklahoma and they argued constantly throughout Ellen's childhood. She often went off on her own, just walking, to relax. This was a habit that worried her mother.
Joe was killed in the line of duty in 1974, just before the war ended. Ellen was twelve and she and her mother were devastated. After that her mother became very depressed and Ellen tried her best to take care of her and do as she was told. She was left hurt and angry over her father's death and had a hard time dealing with it.
In high school, Ellen had a lot of male friends and a few close female friends. She was a decent student, but often skipped classes. She was a bit of a rebel and liked to drink and party. She snuck out a lot and made a habit of taking off for days at a time, both to spend time with friends and get away from her mother.
She met Bill Harvelle when she was seventeen years old and attending a party her friends were having in an old abandoned house that was rumored to be haunted. Ellen didn’t care much about the ghost stories. To her the place was just an empty house off the beaten path where they could party without worrying about the cops being called.
Little did she know there was actually truth to the rumors. When strange things started happening – doors opening and closing, windows breaking, objects moving on their own, Ellen at first laughed them off as her friends playing a joke. But she quickly lost her sense of humor and demanded to know who was behind it. It was then that Bill spoke up. Up until then he had been very quiet and observant. He revealed that the house was, indeed, haunted by a vengeful spirit and he was there to make sure it crossed over. It was through this incident that Ellen was introduced to the supernatural world. Wielding iron and rock salt and fighting alongside Bill to protect her friends, Ellen felt frightened, but strangely comfortable.
After the party broke up, Ellen began spending more time with Bill and, after some coaxing, he agreed to train her to become a hunter. Over the next few years they fell in love and Ellen took to hunting like a fish to water. Ellen moved out of her mother’s house as soon as she graduated from high school and she began traveling with Bill. Soon she and Bill were going on jobs together and it was as if they’d been doing it all their lives.
Bill and Ellen got married in 1984 and on April 7, 1985 Ellen gave birth to their daughter, Joanna Beth Harvelle. Bill and Ellen argued over how they would raise their daughter. Ellen wanted her to have as normal a life as possible, not pulled into the hunting life, but Bill argued that keeping Jo in the dark about the supernatural would only put her at a greater risk. Being well known hunters, Bill and Ellen were targets, which meant Jo would also become a target. Grudgingly, Ellen agreed that it would be best to raise Jo with a knowledge of the supernatural, and let her make the choice when she was old enough whether or not to become a hunter.
Ellen met John Winchester through her husband, since the two were friends. She became very close to John and respected him as a hunter. When Bill and John teamed up to go on a hunt, she was suspicious because they were reluctant to share the details. But, she trusted John and didn’t pry too much. When John returned from the hunt alone to inform her that Bill had been killed, she was devastated. From that point on she never forgave John for being responsible for her husband’s death and the two had a falling out.
Ellen kept in touch with John, but they were never close after that. She called him with important information, and was a bit put off and vaguely worried when he didn’t respond… until his sons showed up at her saloon and told her John had been killed by a demon. By then her daughter, Jo, was a grown woman and Ellen wasn’t happy when she snuck off to go hunting with Sam and Dean. Ellen had an argument with Jo when she returned and revealed that John had been responsible for Bill’s death. After that Jo took off on her own, keeping in touch with Ellen so she didn’t worry.
The Roadhouse was destroyed just before the Devil’s Gate was opened, and a lot of people were killed. Thankfully, Jo was not present, but the whereabouts of Ash were unknown. He could have been one of the many unrecognizably charred remains left over, or he could have escaped. Ellen was never sure, but she continues to hold out hope that he is alive and well somewhere. After helping Sam and Dean as best she could after the gate was opened, Ellen rebuilt the Roadhouse by calling in a few favors and being persuasive. Her door is always open to Sam and Dean, no matter what kind of trouble they’re in. She loves them like her own sons, even though she can be hard on them.

Ellen sighed as she picked up a few stray beer bottles from tables around the saloon. It had been a long day followed by an even longer night and she’d been relieved to kick the last few stragglers out of the Roadhouse to lock up. Ever since she’d had the place rebuilt it seemed to be attracting more of the bar-brawling, over-zealous types she couldn’t stand. And if she had to answer one more question about that damn Devil’s Gate business she was going to put her boot in someone’s ass.
She heard the front door open as she was dumping the bottles in a bin behind the bar. She hadn’t actually locked it yet, so she didn’t arm herself with a shotgun to greet the after-hours guest like she would have otherwise.
“Sorry, we’re closed,” she said, her voice sounding heavy and tired.
She only had a few people working for her so far and they were flaky at best. She’d been taking on a lot of extra work at the Roadhouse lately and it was beginning to take its toll.
“Wow. Good to see you, too, Mom.”
Ellen turned suddenly at the familiar voice, a surprised expression on her face.
“I’m gone a couple months and that’s the welcome I get? Jeez.” Jo’s tone was teasing and accompanied by a smirk.
Ellen smiled brightly at the sight of her daughter, looking alive and well. Then her features went back to the slight scowl they were accustomed to.
“Well, maybe if you called first, gave me a little bit o’ warning, I could’ve given the welcome some practice,” Ellen said, walking out from behind the bar to approach her daughter.
“That would’ve ruined the element of surprise,” Jo said.
Ellen looked at Jo sternly for a moment. Jo stared back. After a moment Ellen’s lips curled into a smile. Unable to keep a straight face, Ellen started laughing and pulled her daughter into a hug.
“Good to see you, Jo,” she mumbled into Jo’s hair.
“You, too, Mom,” Jo admitted.
Ellen pulled back and gave Jo a smile before going back to cleaning up. “Help yourself to a beer if you want,” she said.
Jo looked around at the Roadhouse, familiar and yet different. “The place looks good.”
“Yeah. More trouble than it’s worth these days,” Ellen said, getting two beers from behind the bar.
She handed one to Jo and took a seat at one of the clean tables. Jo sat down across from her and they drank for a few seconds in silence.
“So… is it true?” Jo asked quietly.
Ellen gave her a puzzled look. “Is what true?”
“That Sam and Dean were the ones that opened the Devil’s Gate?”
Ellen chuckled softly. It figures, she thought. Should’ve seen that one coming.
“I’ll tell ya, Jo, if you were anyone else asking me that question after the day I’ve had I’d’ve tossed you out of here before you finished that sentence.”
She took a long swig of her beer as Jo awaited a response. This was going to be a long story.
